A fresh legal battle has broken out within the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State over who is entitled to sponsor candidates for Saturday’s local government elections.
The faction loyal to Emeka Beke, recognised by earlier court rulings, has filed a suit against the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission and Tony Okocha, who is backed by the APC national leadership. The Beke group argues that only its executives have the power to conduct primaries and submit names of candidates.

The case, filed at the Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt, was brought by Vice Chairman Awoala Emine on behalf of the Beke-led executive. Twenty-three individuals also joined, each claiming to be the party’s authentic chairmanship candidates for the poll.
The plaintiffs accuse RSIEC of publishing candidates from Okocha’s camp while excluding theirs. They are asking the court to stop the commission from using Okocha’s list, recognise only their nominees, and void the election if their names are not included.
