Belgium says it will recognise a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly later this month, joining a growing list of Western nations including Britain, Canada, Australia and France.
Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot said the move reflects the deepening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and Israel’s continued violations of international law. He stressed the decision is aimed at pressuring both Israel and Hamas to change course, not punishing Israeli citizens.

Mr. Prévot outlined plans for 12 sanctions on Israel, including a ban on settlement products, restrictions on public contracts with Israeli firms, and the designation of certain Israeli ministers and violent settlers as persona non grata. He said Hamas leaders will also face the same measure.
The minister added that recognition will be conditional on the release of Israeli hostages and the removal of Hamas from any governing role in Palestine.
