Bimbo Akintola Revives Debate on Polygamy

Veteran Nollywood actress Bimbo Akintola has reopened debate on polygamy, describing it as both cultural and practical in the modern world. Speaking on an interview monitored by Radio Now 95.3FM, the 55-year-old actress suggested that the reality of fewer men than women makes polygamy a sensible option in some cases.

Akintola reflected on how many in her generation, particularly in Yoruba households, grew up in polygamous homes. She said the practice, though with mixed outcomes, was part of the social fabric and sometimes even initiated by women themselves to maintain household harmony.

The actress, who has previously spoken about being single and childless, added that society’s double standards encourage men to marry multiple wives while demanding fidelity from women. She argued that future change depends on mothers teaching their sons the same moral standards imposed on daughters, thereby shaping a fairer generation.
