Blackout averted as electricity workers suspend strike

Electricity workers have suspended their strike after talks with the Federal Ministry of Power. The industrial action had threatened a nationwide blackout.

The Nigeria Union of Electricity Employees and the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies said their action followed unresolved disputes with the Transmission Company of Nigeria over staff welfare and operations.

At an emergency meeting in Abuja, the parties signed a memorandum of understanding, agreeing to review recommendations in early October and implement measures later in the month. The ministry assured workers they would not be victimised for joining the strike.

Meanwhile, power supply has been boosted as Sahara Group’s Afam 2 plant in Rivers State increased generation to 180 megawatts, strengthening supply to the national grid.
