Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi has announced he would step down after preliminary results showed his party’s defeat in the general elections.
Speaking at a press conference, Masisi congratulated the opposition on their victory and described the journey as “good.” The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), which has ruled since independence in 1966, lost to a coalition of opposition parties.
The main opposition, the Umbrella for Democratic Change, is reported to have secured over 24 seats and aimed to reach 31 for an outright win.
Initial counts suggested that the three main opposition parties together won at least 31 out of 61 legislative seats, shifting power away from the long-dominant BDP. Official results are expected to be confirmed by the electoral commission later today.
