A Brazilian judge has ordered the global removal of Adele’s song “Million Years Ago” from streaming platforms and other media over a plagiarism claim. The injunction, issued by Judge Victor Torres on Friday in Rio de Janeiro’s 6th Commercial Court, is based on a lawsuit filed by Brazilian composer Geraes, who claims the song copied elements of his samba classic “Mulheres” (“Women”).
The order directs Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music, Adele’s record labels, to stop the reproduction, distribution, and commercialization of the song worldwide. If the music companies fail to comply, they face a fine of $8,000 per violation. However, the labels have the option to appeal the decision.

Geraes is seeking $160,000 in moral damages, lost royalties, and songwriting credit for his alleged contribution to the track. The composer’s lawyer, Trotta, confirmed that efforts will be made to ensure that global radio, television, and streaming services are informed of the ruling.
The lawsuit stems from Geraes’ claim that Adele’s 2015 song borrows heavily from his 1995 samba hit, which was popularised by Brazilian singer Martinho da Vila.
