A former National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, has said a cabal within the presidency undermined his office and weakened Nigeria’s national security during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Mr Monguno made the claims in a biography of Mr Buhari titled ‘From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari’, written by Charles Omole, citing a dispute over the replacement of a fuel supplier to the presidential air fleet due to security concerns raised by the fleet’s commander.
He said President Buhari approved the recommendation, but the decision angered the late Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, and later drew objections from Mamman Daura, a nephew of the former president, who questioned his motives and described the move as unjust to the supplier.

Mr Monguno alleged that following the disagreement, funds approved for the Office of the National Security Adviser were withheld, leading to lapses in critical surveillance systems, expired subscriptions with foreign partners, and weakened coordination within the national security architecture.
