The Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, Samson Itodo, has described the late President Muhammadu Buhari as a disciplined leader whose time in office was defined by both key reforms and critical shortcomings. Speaking in an interview monitored by Radio Now, Itodo praised Buhari’s personal integrity, punctuality, and support for reform legislation.
He highlighted the signing of the Not Too Young To Run Bill and the 2022 Electoral Act as major milestones in Nigeria’s democratic journey. Itodo also acknowledged Buhari’s contributions to infrastructure development and backing for national plans such as Agenda 2060.

However, he pointed to democratic backsliding under Buhari’s administration, citing the crackdown on #EndSARS protesters, harassment of journalists, and rising repression. He said Buhari’s style lacked tolerance for dissent and open dialogue.
Itodo added that while the former president allowed his appointees significant independence, the failure to enforce oversight created gaps that enabled mismanagement and corruption. He said Buhari’s legacy is one of contrasts, combining reformist strides with missed governance opportunities.
