By-Election (Aba North/South Federal Constituency) – Radio Now Explains

Following the death of Ossy Prestige, a member of the House of Representatives, representing Aba North/South Federal Constituency, Abia State, the independent national electoral commission, INEC conducted a by-election on Saturday, March 27th, 2021. The by-election had a low turnout, but resulted in the emergence of Chimaobi Ebisike, of the people’s democratic party, PDP, as the victor.

In this episode of Radio Now Explains, we speak with Oga Musa, a senior lecturer, with the department of political science, federal university Nassarawa, Lafia to gain a better understanding of what a by-election is, and the possible factors that lead to a by-election being held.

Musa explains that a by-election is simply a means through which a new member is elected in a vacant space, and goes through the instances in which a by-election is triggered.
