CAF President Motsepe Vows to Implement Court Ruling Over Morocco’s Awarded AFCON Title

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has promised to implement whatever decision the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) reaches regarding the disputed 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title. CAF’s Appeals Committee had on March 17 declared Morocco the winner of the final, which was played on January 18, awarding a three-nil victory despite Morocco losing the actual match on the pitch by one goal to nil.

The decision came after Senegal’s players withdrew from the field, and CAF’s ruling stripped the Teranga Lions of their victory. Motsepe made the pledge on Wednesday during a visit to Senegal, 22 days after the historic decision, acknowledging that the matter is now before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The Senegalese Football Federation had filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport following CAF’s unprecedented ruling, and the Senegalese government had on March 18 called for an international investigation into suspicions of corruption within the leading bodies of the African confederation. Motsepe, during his visit, emphasised that CAF will fully respect and implement whatever decision the court takes.

He said his visit was driven by a strong commitment to working closely with Senegal’s football leadership, alongside the president, the government and the people of the nation. The CAF President also stated that those matters are now behind, with CAF’s priority now on developing football across member nations and strengthening the game across the African continent. Motsepe is expected to deliver the same message when he visits Morocco later today.
