Following the death of Pope Francis, Dublin-born Cardinal Kevin Farrell has assumed temporary stewardship of the Vatican in his capacity as Camerlengo, a role charged with overseeing the administration of the Holy See until a new pontiff is elected.
Appointed by the late pope in 2019, the 77-year-old cardinal, who holds both Irish and American citizenship, will organise the funeral arrangements, coordinate meetings with senior church officials, and supervise preparations for the Conclave that will choose the next pope.

Cardinal Farrell, noted for his affable manner and distinct Spanish spoken with an Irish lilt, has a long-standing connection to Latin America, having served as chaplain at the University of Monterrey in Mexico. Since January 2024, he has also led the Vatican’s Supreme Court.
He will be assisted by three senior cardinals and is empowered to request financial and administrative reports from all Vatican departments during this transitional period.
