The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has urged bank customers to beware of fake SWIFT messages during foreign exchange remittances. The warning comes amid rising complaints from individuals and organisations about uncredited foreign currency transfers to their Nigerian accounts.
In a statement signed by Hakama Sidi-Ali, Acting Director of Corporate Communications, the CBN clarified that many claimants provide fake documents such as SWIFT MT103 and SWIFT acknowledgment copies as proof of remittance. However, these messages are often untraceable on the SWIFT platform, and the funds are not received by Nigerian banks.

The apex bank emphasised the need for due diligence and advised stakeholders to confirm the authenticity of remittance documents before initiating claims. The move is aimed at safeguarding financial transactions and maintaining trust in the banking system.
