Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles suffered a 1-0 defeat to Senegal in their opening Group D match at the 2024 African Nations Championship in Tanzania. Christian Gomis scored the winner for Senegal in the second half at the Amani Stadium.
Speaking after the match, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle said the Senegalese side deserved the win, describing them as more aggressive and intense throughout the encounter. He admitted his players struggled to settle into the game mentally.

Chelle noted that a defensive error led to the goal, but said it was part of the learning curve for the team. He suggested the players may have been nervous, which affected their overall performance.
Nigeria will face Sudan in their second group game on Tuesday, as they look to revive their campaign in the continental tournament.
