Republic of Ireland Under-18 international Jayden Umeh scored his first UEFA Youth League goal on Tuesday, but it proved little consolation as Benfica were beaten 5-2 by Chelsea at Cobham. Umeh, of Nigerian descent, was one of three Nigerian players in the starting line-ups, alongside Chelsea’s Landon Emenalo and Tayo Subuloye.
Chelsea made a bright start and took the lead through Shumaira Mheuka’s penalty before Umeh briefly levelled with a close-range finish. However, Mheuka restored the advantage from the spot and completed his hat-trick with a powerful header early in the second half.

Daniel Banjaqui reduced the deficit, but Chelsea substitutes Ryan Kavuma-McQueen and Kobe Barbour, linking up with Leo Cardoso, sealed victory for the two-time champions. Umeh has now registered two goals in eight matches across all competitions for Benfica’s youth sides this season.
