China is set to expand its economic footprint in Nigeria with plans to establish electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plants, in a move expected to unlock new value in Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
Speaking in Abuja on Sunday, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, HE Cui Jianchun, reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to Nigeria as a key strategic partner. He referenced recent discussions between Presidents Xi Jinping and Bola Tinubu, describing them as instrumental in strengthening bilateral ties.

The ambassador emphasised China’s expectation that its companies in Nigeria must operate within the law, uphold environmental and safety standards, and contribute meaningfully through Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.
He also reiterated China’s zero-tolerance stance on illegal mining and pledged cooperation with Nigerian authorities to tackle offenders.
In response, Solid Minerals Minister Dele Alake welcomed the partnership but expressed concern over misconduct by a minority of Chinese firms, following reports of bribery involving a Chinese national and local security personnel.
