Nigeria is grappling with a severe cholera outbreak, with over 14,200 cases reported and 378 deaths recorded since January 2024, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC). This marks a dramatic spike in infections, nearly 300% higher than the 3,500 cases reported during the same period last year.

The outbreak has spread across 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory, affecting 339 local government areas. The current case fatality ratio (CFR) is approximately 2.7%, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

At a press briefing in Abuja, NCDC Director-General Dr. Jide Idris expressed deep concern over the impact on young children, particularly those under five years old, who are the most vulnerable to the disease.

Dr. Idris also highlighted that recent floods in northern states—particularly Borno, Adamawa, Jigawa, Yobe, and Kano—have worsened the outbreak, turning these regions into the epicenters of the crisis. The floods have accelerated the spread of cholera, complicating efforts to contain the disease.
