Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, says a faction of the Nigeria Labour Congress was being funded by the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency when he took over government. Speaking in Abuja, he said the situation dated back to the Cold War era, when Nigeria’s two dominant labour centres were allegedly financed by foreign intelligence agencies.
Mr Obasanjo made the remarks at the Yar’Adua Centre during the 85th birthday celebration and book presentation in honour of a former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Hassan Summonu. He said one labour organisation was backed by the Soviet era KGB, while the other received support from the CIA, a development he said undermined national control of the labour movement.

The former president said this prompted labour reforms aimed at creating a single, independent and nationally funded workers’ union. He said Justice Adebiyi was appointed to oversee the reform process, which led to the establishment of the Nigeria Labour Congress as a unified body, with Hassan Summonu emerging as its first elected leader.
