Victims of forced evictions and civil society groups gathered at the Yaba Magistrate Court in Lagos today as two activists faced trial over their involvement in a protest against demolitions in the state.
In a statement, the Coalition Against Demolition, Forced Eviction, Landgrabbing and Displacement in Lagos State condemned the prosecution of Comrade Hassan Soweto and Comrade Dele Frank. The group says the charges stem from a peaceful protest held on 28 January 2026 against mass evictions.
The coalition alleges that security forces used tear gas to disperse the protest, resulting in injuries, arrests and the seizure of equipment. It also says thirteen community members from Oworonshoki were previously charged over a protest against the October 2025 demolition of Ojileru in the area.

The group further accused the Lagos State Government of ignoring court rulings related to waterfront demolitions and failing to implement a February 2025 judgment of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice which ordered compensation for victims of forced evictions.
