Construction Body Warns Against Contract Terminations

The Federation of Construction Industry has cautioned the Federal Government that the rising termination of contracts could worsen unemployment and heighten insecurity in Nigeria.

Speaking in Abuja after the group’s 69th Annual General Meeting, its President, Vincent Barrah, said many member firms are struggling to operate at full capacity despite having the expertise, manpower and equipment. He criticised the Ministry of Works for cancelling projects after previously giving assurances, describing the move as unfair to an industry with decades of proven service.

Mr. Barrah noted that while the ministry was severing contracts, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, was commissioning projects handled by FOCI members. He praised the FCT for recognising the quality of work delivered, stressing that none of the country’s collapsed buildings had been constructed by federation members.
