Nigeria’s Council of State has approved President Bola Tinubu’s exercise of the prerogative of mercy for 175 individuals across various categories. The decision followed a presentation by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, based on recommendations from the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy.
According to Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, 82 inmates were granted full pardon, 65 received sentence reductions, while seven death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment.

Among those covered were members of the Ogoni Nine and Ogoni Four, who were also posthumously honoured by the President in efforts to promote reconciliation and peace in the Niger Delta. The Council also ratified the appointments of Dr Aminu Yusuf as Chairman of the National Population Commission and Tonge Bularafa as Federal Commissioner for Yobe State.
