A Rivers State High Court has dismissed an application seeking to halt the August 30 local government elections in the state.
Justice Stephen Jumbo ruled that the motion lacked merit, allowing the polls to proceed as scheduled. The suit, filed by Port Harcourt lawyer Williams Abayomi-Stanley against President Bola Tinubu, the Attorney General of the Federation, and the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, sought to challenge the legality of appointments to the electoral body.

While rejecting the request to suspend the elections, the court granted an order for substituted service to the defendants. The substantive case has been adjourned to September 10.
Counsel to the claimant said his client only sought constitutional interpretation of whether the president had the powers to appoint members of the state electoral body, and welcomed the court’s partial ruling.
