A Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the Inspector-General of Police and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to pay ₦10 million in damages to a group of #EndSARS protesters for violating their fundamental rights. The ruling followed claims of harassment during the fourth memorial rally held on 20 October 2024.
Justice Musa Kakaki ruled that the protesters were unjustly treated by law enforcement officers while exercising their constitutional right to peaceful assembly. He emphasised that while the police are empowered to maintain order, they must do so within the limits of the law.

Those awarded damages include Hassan Taiwo Soweto, Uadiale Kingsley, Ilesanmi Kehinde, Osopale Adeseye, Olamilekan Sanusi and Osugba Blessing. The case also involved civil rights groups such as the Education Rights Campaign, Take It Back Movement and Campaign for the Defence of Human Rights.
The court’s decision comes amid renewed scrutiny of police conduct during protests, with rights groups calling for accountability and justice for past abuses.
