Justice Maryann Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory High Court has refused to grant a bail application filed by former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello. The judge ruled that the application, submitted prematurely, was incompetent as it was filed when Bello was neither in custody nor before the court.
The former governor is facing trial alongside two others on an alleged N110bn money laundering charge brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). In court, Bello’s counsel, JB Daudu (SAN), had urged the judge to grant bail, presenting what he described as sufficient grounds for the request.

However, the prosecution, represented by Kemi Pinheiro, opposed the application, arguing that it was filed before the defendant’s arraignment and thus lacked legal merit. Justice Anenih upheld the prosecution’s position, dismissing the application on the grounds of incompetence.
