Court Reserves Ruling in Former Governor Fayose’s ₦6.9bn Money Laundering Trial

A Federal High Court in Lagos has reserved its ruling on a no-case submission filed by former Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, who is standing trial over alleged money laundering and theft totalling ₦6.9 billion.

Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke adjourned proceedings after hearing final arguments from Fayose’s counsel, Kanu Agabi, SAN; Olalekan Ojo, SAN, for the second defendant, Spotless Investment Limited; and EFCC prosecutor, Rotimi Jacobs, SAN.

The former governor and his firm face an 11-count charge related to the alleged diversion of public funds during his tenure, including ₦1.2 billion said to have funded his 2014 campaign and a $5 million cash payment allegedly received from former minister Musiliu Obanikoro.

Mr Agabi argued the EFCC had failed to establish a prima facie case.

The matter, initially filed in 2018, will resume on 10 July for the court’s decision on the no-case plea.
