Court to Rule on MultiChoice, FCCPC Dispute Over Price Hike

A Federal High Court in Abuja has set 8 May for judgment in the case between MultiChoice Nigeria Limited and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC.

The court had earlier barred the FCCPC from taking action against MultiChoice after the company raised subscription prices for its DStv and GOtv services. MultiChoice had sought legal protection from possible sanctions by the regulator.

During proceedings, the court granted the FCCPC’s request for more time to regularise its filings. It also approved MultiChoice’s withdrawal of an interlocutory injunction request, which had been overtaken by events.

MultiChoice, represented by lead counsel Mr Onigbanjo, is challenging the FCCPC’s authority to regulate the pricing of its services. The court’s ruling is expected to clarify the commission’s oversight powers in the pay-TV sector.
