The Senator representing Delta North, Ned Nwoko, says peace in the South-East region can be restored if the Federal Government creates one more state and releases the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu. He said the region’s unrest stems from years of perceived marginalisation and injustice by successive administrations.
Speaking in a TV interview monitored by Radio Now’s Newsdesk, Senator Nwoko said his proposal for the creation of Anioma State from the present Delta State would bring the South-East to parity with other regions of the country, which have six states each. He maintained that creating the new state and releasing Kanu would address the grievances fuelling agitations in the region.

Nwoko described Kanu’s continued detention as unjust, insisting that his release would pave the way for dialogue and reconciliation. The IPOB leader has been in the custody of the Department of State Services since his re-arrest in 2021 and faces terrorism-related charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The lawmaker added that the National Assembly’s Joint Committee on Constitution Review has endorsed the creation of an additional state in the South-East and expressed optimism that Anioma State would be chosen. He said President Bola Tinubu’s approval of the proposal would be a lasting gift to the people of Anioma and the wider Igbo community.
