The Cross River State House of Assembly has removed the Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Council, Honourable Theresa Ushie, after adopting the findings of its Committee on Judiciary and Public Petitions. Nineteen of the 25 lawmakers voted in favour during Tuesday’s plenary.
The case began in June after eight councillors filed a petition alleging corruption, abuse of office, unlawful stoppage of salaries and failure to follow due process. Ushie was suspended for 90 days, and Vice Chairman Egbung Odama was appointed acting chairman during the investigation.
Presenting the report, Committee Chairman Honourable Davies Eta said the allegations, which were raised in a petition dated May 19, were substantiated after engagements with the petitioners, the suspended chairman and other stakeholders. He noted that her conduct fell below expectations and supported her removal.

Following the adoption of the report, the Assembly resolved to remove Ushie for gross misconduct and directed that a bye-election be conducted to fill the vacant seat. Speaker Elvert Ayambem said the House remained committed to transparency and accountability in the state.
