CSO Warns Nigeria’s Democracy Under Pressure from Insecurity, Hardship

A civil society organisation has warned that Nigeria’s democracy is facing increasing pressure from economic hardship, insecurity and shrinking civic space. The Kimpact Development Initiative, KDI, issued the statement to mark the 2025 International Day of Democracy.

KDI’s Executive Director, Bukola Idowu, said democracy should not be reduced to election day rituals but must reflect accountability, fairness and tangible improvements in people’s lives. He noted that women, young people, persons with disabilities and other marginalised groups continue to face barriers to participation.

The organisation said disinformation and political polarisation have further weakened public trust, while restrictions on civic space risk undermining democratic progress. However, it acknowledged that citizens continue to organise, observe, fact-check and innovate, demonstrating resilience.

KDI announced that it will host a side event at the United Nations General Assembly on September 18, titled “Strengthening Democratic Foundations in Africa.” The forum is expected to bring together reformers and researchers to share practical steps to reinforce democratic resilience across the continent.
