Datti Baba-Ahmed denies declaring for 2027 presidency

The Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has denied declaring an interest in contesting the 2027 presidential election. He made the clarification on Friday during an interview monitored by Radio Now’s Newsdesk.

Datti said he merely reiterated his membership of the Labour Party and stressed that any declaration of interest would follow the Independent National Electoral Commission timetable and decisions of the party. He accused social media users of spreading misleading narratives to emotional audiences.

His comments come days after the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, aligned with the African Democratic Congress coalition during an event in Enugu. Datti said Obi’s decision does not alter their relationship, noting that he remains a member of the Labour Party.

The Kaduna-born politician said Peter Obi would be welcome to return to the Labour Party if he does not secure a ticket in the ADC. He added that he had not heard Obi formally announce a defection to the ADC, saying investigations into the matter were ongoing.
