At least 60 people have died after a boat capsized in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State. The vessel, carrying around 90 passengers, struck a submerged tree stump on Tuesday morning near Gausawa in Malale ward.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency said the accident was caused by overloading. Officials confirmed that 29 bodies were initially recovered, 50 people rescued, and two declared missing.

Local authorities later revised the toll, saying 60 people had been confirmed dead while several others remain in critical condition. Community leaders reported that women and children made up most of the victims, with some buried on Tuesday in line with Islamic rites.
This is the second major boat tragedy in Niger State since July, when 25 people died in a similar accident in Shiroro. More than 90 people have lost their lives in boat mishaps across the state over the past year.
