At least 218 people have been confirmed dead and more than 150 injured after the roof of a nightclub collapsed in the Dominican Republic’s capital, Santo Domingo.
The incident occurred during a concert at the Jet Set nightclub, headlined by popular merengue singer Rubby Pérez, who also died in the tragedy, according to his manager.

Among the victims were Monte Cristi’s governor, Nelsy Cruz, and former Major League Baseball pitcher Octavio Dotel, who died en route to hospital after being pulled from the rubble.
Hundreds of people were inside the venue at the time, and around 400 rescuers are still searching for survivors. Authorities fear the death toll could rise further.
