Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has called on the Federal Government to declare a national war on insecurity. He warned that Nigeria’s casualty figures now rival those of countries officially at war.
Mr Obi was reacting to reports that more than 100 people were killed in attacks across Borno, Sokoto, Katsina and Edo states over the weekend. He highlighted incidents including the killing of eight NSCDC officers, the abduction of a Chinese national in Edo, and the murder of five soldiers and 58 civilians in Borno State.

In a statement on X, he urged the government to suspend foreign trips and mobilise every resource and agency to confront the crisis. He said true leadership must be demonstrated at home by personally coordinating security operations.
Mr Obi warned that insecurity is the fastest path to national collapse, citing Somalia and Libya as examples. He added that urgent action was needed to prevent a total descent into anarchy and to rebuild Nigeria into a safe and secure nation.
