The Nigeria Labour Congress has raised alarm over what it describes as a growing slide towards authoritarian rule in the country. President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, issued the warning on Monday at the opening of the 21st Rain School in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, with this year’s edition themed “Labour and Human Rights in a Shrinking Democratic Space.”
Ajaero accused the federal and state governments of systematically stifling civic freedoms and union activities, warning that the trend could worsen ahead of the 2027 elections. He alleged that governance was being abandoned for political scheming, leaving workers to suffer worsening economic hardship and insecurity.

The labour leader also claimed that workers’ contributions were being unlawfully withheld, describing it as “stealing workers’ sweat.” He said the country now ranks among the ten worst globally for violations of workers’ rights, blaming weakened institutions and the erosion of democratic principles.
