DHQ Clarifies Border Incident Involving Nigerien Soldiers in Jibia

Local vigilantes in Katsina mistakenly opened fire on a Nigerien military convoy that entered Mazanya village in Jibia LGA to fetch water. The incident occurred on Saturday around 2pm when the troops were misidentified as bandits.

The Defence Headquarters says the soldiers, travelling in four gun trucks and a Toyota SUV, were on a routine cross-border activity. A brief exchange followed before Nigerian security authorities and the Nigerien commander resolved the misunderstanding.

Director of Defence Media Operations, Michael Onoja, said the Nigerien troops were eventually allowed to complete their water-fetching mission and return across the border. He added that the statement was issued to correct misinformation and reassure the public.

Onoja also disclosed that both countries have held a joint border security meeting to improve coordination. He urged residents of Mazanya and other border communities to remain calm but vigilant while going about their lawful activities.
