Director-General of WTO, Dr Okonjo-Iweala visits Nigeria

The newly appointed director-general of the World Trade Organization, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was at Aso Villa, Abuja on a courtesy visit to President Muhammadu Buhari on her first official visit to Nigeria since assuming office on the 1st of March, 2021. In his welcome speech, President Buhari said that despite the robust support Nigeria gave to her candidacy for the position, Dr. Iweala also earned it.

In her speech, she highlighted her reason for visiting Nigeria, saying she had a discussion with the president over how Nigeria can work with the World Trade Organization to improve its trade standings

She also spoke on the need for Nigeria to consider moving from it’s dependence on fossil fuels to renewable energy with a focus on manufacturing for job creation.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala was also at the federal ministry of foreign affairs to discuss the world trade organization’s plans to help Nigeria raise money to address its infrastructure deficit

Dr Ngozi Okonji-Iweala is in Nigeria on a five-day working visit.
