Doctors Without Borders has said three of its aid workers were deliberately killed in 2021 during the conflict in Ethiopia’s Tigray region. The organisation, known as MSF, released findings from its internal review on Tuesday, confirming the attack was intentional and targeted.
Those killed were Spanish emergency coordinator Maria Hernandez and two Ethiopian staff, Yohannes Halefom Reda and Tedros Gebremariam Gebremichael. The trio, who worked for MSF-Spain, were shot dead on June 24, 2021, while on duty in southern Tigray.

MSF stated that both the victims and their vehicle were clearly identified as humanitarian workers, and a convoy of Ethiopian soldiers was present during the incident. The group said repeated efforts to obtain answers from the Ethiopian government had yielded no credible response.
The Tigray conflict, which raged from 2020 to 2022, claimed an estimated 600,000 lives and displaced over a million people. MSF accused the government in Addis Ababa of failing to fulfil its moral obligation to investigate the killings.
