Domestic Airlines Fault FCCPC Over Price Fixing Claims

The Airline Operators of Nigeria has criticised the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission over an interim report alleging that domestic airlines manipulated ticket prices during the 2025 yuletide period. The Commission disclosed on 26 February that it found evidence suggesting fare increases on certain routes.

In a statement, AON spokesperson and Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Obiorah Okonkwo, said the claims were based on a flawed understanding of airline economics and could harm the survival of domestic operators. He said the association respects government institutions but would reject conclusions not grounded in operational realities.

The FCCPC’s review followed reports that some airlines raised ticket prices by more than 131 per cent on routes to the South-East and South-South during the peak travel season. The Commission said the assessment forms part of its statutory duty to promote competition and protect consumers.

The FCCPC’s Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Tunji Bello, said the findings are interim and that further structural and route-level analysis is ongoing. He said the Commission will determine any regulatory or enforcement action after completing the review.
