Don Maseratte Allegedly Hired Men to Flog a Staff Accused of Stealing

A viral video on social media shows three men assaulting a lady while others either stand around filming the incident or sit by and watch. Reports claim that the shop is a Lagos boutique owned by Chidiebele Onu, popularly known as Don Maseratte, in the Lagos Island area of Lagos State. Mr Onu is accused of hiring the men to brutally assault a female staff member suspected of theft.

The act of violence caught on video exemplifies a troubling trend in which some individuals take the law into their own hands, resorting to what is often referred to as “Jungle Justice.”

This incident raises serious concerns about the nature of employer-employee relationships in Nigeria. It highlights the blurred lines between authority and abuse, where some employers believe their power over employees justifies violent repercussions for perceived wrongdoing. The law clearly states that physical assault is unacceptable, yet in this case, the boundaries of reasonable disciplinary measures have been grossly violated.

Questions arise as to why Don Maseratte, who is accused of hiring enforcers, did not opt to involve law enforcement officials.

Following the incident, Radio Now reporters visited Don Maseratte’s shop to uncover more details but met the boutique locked. Inquiries revealed that some staff had been taken to Kester Police Station, Oluwole, Lagos Island, and later transferred to Ikeja Police Command, according to the DCO of Kester Police Station. Efforts to speak to the neighbours were futile as they remained tight-lipped about the incident. CSP Ben Hundeyin via X confirmed the arrest of three suspects, though did not release their identities. He added that there are ongoing efforts to apprehend additional individuals involved and to establish contact with the victim.
