Former President Goodluck Jonathan has voiced concerns over Nigeria’s deepening political crisis, attributing the situation to recent court rulings that he says have “turned the cone of justice upside down.” Speaking at the 67th birthday celebration and 50-book presentation of renowned human rights lawyer, Professor Mike Ozekhome, Jonathan urged judges to avoid being influenced by political pressures, warning that such judgments threaten the stability of the nation’s political system.
Mr. Jonathan, who co-chaired the event with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, pointed to a recent ruling that allowed a ward chairman to expel a national chairman of a political party, calling on the Supreme Court to revisit the decision. He emphasized that these decisions have thrown the country into disarray, urging caution to preserve the integrity of the judiciary.
During the event, ex-President Obasanjo hinted that he has more to say about the political climate but suggested that the timing is not yet right for a full statement. He also praised Ozekhome for his commitment to social change and justice.
