DRC Army Recaptures Key Towns from Armed Groups in Eastern Region

The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) have announced the recapture of several towns previously occupied by armed groups in the eastern part of the country. Among the towns recovered is Ngungu, a strategic location in Masisi territory near Goma, North Kivu’s provincial capital. Other towns in South Kivu province have also been retaken.

Army spokesperson Guillaume Ndjike Kaiko confirmed that these victories were the result of a joint military operation led by provincial commanders. He listed other recaptured towns, including Lumbishi, Ruzirantaka, Kamatale, Bitagata, and Kabingo. “The rebels have seen their adventure come to a halt,” Kaiko stated, emphasizing the success of FARDC forces in pushing back the armed groups.

Despite these successes, rebels have continued to make gains in other areas, with intense fighting ongoing. Some villages in Masisi, including Masisi Centre, remain under rebel control, highlighting the continuing instability in the region. The eastern DRC has been plagued by conflict for decades, with over 100 armed groups competing for control of the mineral-rich territory near the border with Rwanda.

This conflict has resulted in one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises, with nearly two million people displaced since 2022 due to the ongoing clashes between FARDC and the M23 rebel group. The DRC government and the United Nations accuse Rwanda of supporting M23, a claim Rwanda denies. Since 1998, the conflict has claimed over six million lives and displaced millions more.
