Drug Screening for Youth Corps and Couples 'Preventive, Not Punitive', Says NDLEA

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has defended its call for mandatory drug integrity tests for youth corps members and intending couples, framing the initiative as a preventive health measure rather than a punitive action.

Speaking during a visit to the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Brigadier-General Olakunle Nafiu, NDLEA Chairman Brigadier-General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retired) said the programme aims to curb substance abuse among young Nigerians and offer early intervention for those at risk.

General Marwa emphasised that the scheme would allow individuals who test positive for drug use to access treatment before their condition worsens, thereby reducing long-term health consequences.

He also hailed the NYSC as a “national treasure” and an essential pillar of unity, congratulating Brigadier-General Nafiu on his recent appointment and pledging continued collaboration between the two agencies.
