Nigerian singer Duncan Mighty has claimed that artists from Port Harcourt helped build the foundation of today’s Afrobeats sound. Speaking in an interview with Hip TV, he argued that musicians such as himself, Timaya, Burna Boy and Omah Lay introduced rhythms and slang that now feature prominently across the genre.
He said elements of the Port Harcourt sound — particularly Ikwerre expressions — can be heard “in almost every Afrobeats track released today,” insisting the city’s musical identity has become woven into the mainstream.

His comments, however, have sparked mixed reactions online, with some listeners acknowledging Port Harcourt’s influence while others criticised the singer for overstating the city’s role in shaping Afrobeats’ global success.
