The Ebonyi State Government has reported 23 deaths from Lassa fever in 2024. Governor Francis Nwifuru disclosed this during a health event in Abakaliki on Thursday, organised by the State Ministry of Health. He revealed that out of 394 suspected cases this year, 48 have been confirmed positive.
In response, the state plans to establish specialist hospitals in each of the three senatorial zones to improve healthcare access in rural areas. The initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance healthcare delivery and better prepare for disease outbreaks.

Governor Nwifuru highlighted his administration’s commitment to strengthening public health infrastructure, improving surveillance systems, and promoting community engagement to tackle life-threatening diseases such as Lassa fever and cholera.
These efforts, according to the governor, aim to prevent future outbreaks and improve the overall well-being of Ebonyi residents, particularly in underserved rural communities.
