ECOWAS Approves Removal of Ticket Levies from January to Lower Air Travel Costs

The regional bloc Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced it will stop air-ticket taxes from January 2026, in a move designed to lower the cost of flights within West Africa. The decision was confirmed by Chris Appiah, the ECOWAS director of transport and communications on Thursday.

By removing levies added to ticket prices, the bloc hopes to encourage mobility and boost intra-regional commerce.

Airlines and airport authorities have been given 30 days to adjust fare structures and ensure the tax cuts are passed to consumers. Governments have been advised to explore alternative revenue mechanisms for airport upkeep and security so safety standards are maintained.

ECOWAS said the impact of the tax suspension will be reviewed after six months with data collected on passenger numbers, fare changes and airline revenue.
