The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has directed its members to continue granting free movement to citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, despite the countries’ official exit from the regional body. The withdrawal became effective today, Wednesday 29 January, 2025, after a notice was issued one year ago.
In a statement, ECOWAS expressed its commitment to regional solidarity and the well-being of the people, instructing members to continue recognising the national passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo for citizens of the three countries until further notice.

ECOWAS also urged member states to treat goods and services from the three countries according to the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and investment policies. Furthermore, it called for continued cooperation with ECOWAS officials from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger during their assignments.
The announcement comes as citizens in the three countries celebrated their exit from ECOWAS, citing dissatisfaction with the regional body’s ties to France. The countries have formed a new bloc, the Alliance of Sahelian States (AES), and plan to launch their own uniform passport.
