The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has called for the release of the 46 Ivorian troops held in detention since July by the ruling junta in Mali.
Leaders of the community who met in Abuja yesterday warned that if the troops are not released by the 1 of January 2023, Mali could face sanctions. According to Omar Alieu Touray, ECOWAS President, the bloc reserves the right to act if the soldiers are not released by the given date.
Faure Gnassingbe, President of Togo who has been mediating between Mali and Ivory Coast, is expected to travel to Mali to “demand” the release of the soldiers.
