Edo Tribunal Upholds Governor Okpebholo’s Election Victory

The Edo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, sitting in Abuja, has upheld Senator Monday Okpebholo’s election as governor.

A three-member panel, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, dismissed the petition brought by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, challenging the outcome of the 21 September 2024 election.

The tribunal ruled that the petitioners failed to substantiate claims of electoral malpractice, citing their inability to present competent witnesses. It stressed that allegations of non-compliance with the Electoral Act must be convincingly proven.

The panel noted that the PDP’s failure to call polling unit officers, presiding officials, or voters weakened its case. It added that most of the 19 witnesses presented merely gave hearsay evidence, rendering the petition unsustainable.
