EFCC Raises Alarm Over Fraud in Nigeria's Electricity Sector

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has sounded the alarm over widespread fraud in Nigeria’s electricity sector, which he says is linked to frequent national grid failures. Olukoyede made the statement on Tuesday during a visit by the House of Representatives Committee on Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja.

He explained that the persistent grid collapses are due, in part, to the use of poor-quality, substandard materials across the sector, which he attributed to corruption and fraud.

Olukoyede further disclosed that the EFCC plans to shift its focus toward crime prevention rather than solely on asset recovery. He emphasised that more attention will be directed to monitoring the expenditures of various government ministries and agencies.
