Egypt has put forth a proposal for a two-day ceasefire in Gaza, aimed at facilitating a swap of four Israeli hostages for several Palestinian prisoners. President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, speaking at a press conference in Cairo, indicated that the ceasefire would enable much-needed humanitarian aid to enter Gaza.
El-Sissi added that within 10 days of implementing this temporary ceasefire, discussions should begin on establishing a permanent truce. Egypt, a critical mediator alongside Qatar and the United States, has been working actively to broker a pause in hostilities.
In a renewed diplomatic push, negotiators gathered in Qatar on Sunday, with both CIA Director William Burns and Israel’s Mossad Chief David Barnea participating.
This marks the first time President el-Sissi has publicly advocated such a plan. So far, there has been no official response from either Israel or Hamas on Egypt’s proposal.
