Eight people, including a child, have been confirmed dead after a truck lost control and rammed into a barricade near Adekunle Ajasin University in Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State. The Federal Road Safety Corps said the crash, which occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, involved a truck loaded with stone dust and a motorcycle.
The FRSC Sector Commander in the state confirmed the incident, noting that the truck suffered brake failure before colliding with the barricade. He appealed to motorists to exercise caution, particularly during the “ember months,” and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before travelling.

According to the Students’ Union of Adekunle Ajasin University, the vehicle belonged to Dangote Cement and was travelling from Ikare when the accident occurred. The union’s spokesperson, Mosadoluwa Ajidagba, said about 10 people may have died and urged students to stay away from the highway while authorities investigate.
Akoko South West Local Government Chairman, Ayo Ajana, expressed sorrow over the tragedy and extended condolences to the victims’ families. He said discussions were underway with state authorities to implement permanent safety measures along the high-risk Akungba route.
